The free, introductory Quick Start shows you the tools that exist and names them. In the three-hour Master Class, you’ll walk through a real project and look at it from the first question to the final checkmark. You’ll leave with a way of seeing you can use daily. ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR,
TOPHER WOLFE

For twenty-five years, Topher Wolfe has worked in film and television as an Assistant Director. The job has a deceptively simple description: the Director is in charge of what you see on the screen; the Assistant Directors are in charge of getting it there. Note the plural — it’s a team. From 2nd 2nd AD to Key 2nd AD to 1st AD, Topher has worked the floor from every position.

For the better part of the last decade he has been a 1st Assistant Director — the person at the center of the floor — on scripted television series for Showtime, NBC, Peacock, TNT, BET, Apple TV+, and FX. Crews of a hundred or more. Immovable deadlines. Decisions measured in seconds, with real money riding on each one. The way he describes the job: “I don’t tell people how to do their jobs. I tell them where they need to be and when they need to do it.”

Nobody on a film set calls that project management. But that is exactly what it is. A graduate of Carnegie Mellon University and the Directors Guild of America’s Assistant Director Training Program — one of the most selective professional programs in the industry — Topher has spent his career walking into rooms full of experts, each one the master of a single department, and getting all of them to move as one.

Collaborative Learning, Inc. and ACCESS Leadership are offering an engaging leadership development course focused on practical approaches to Coaching and Being Coached. The course is designed to help leaders, supervisors, and employees use coaching to strengthen performance, support employee development, and build organizational capacity.

The course combines presentation, reflection, discussion, Q&A, and application exercises. Participants examine both sides of the coaching relationship: how to coach others effectively and how to make productive use of coaching for their own development.

You will receive digital copies of the presentation materials in advance, allowing you to work with them before, during and after the online session.

Participants completing this course will receive 3.5 Professional Development Hours (PDH).

COURSE OVERVIEW

This course presents coaching as a practical process for developing and empowering employees, sustaining organizations, and improving service to customers/clients and communities. Participants explore the purpose and value of coaching; the continuum from directing and advising through teaching, mentoring, and coaching; and the skills and behaviors that distinguish effective coaches. The course provides structured methods for addressing specific performance or behavior issues and for supporting broader employee-directed development. It also addresses listening, questioning, resistance, barriers to change, self-coaching, and the responsibilities of the person being coached.

The purpose and organizational value of coaching
Characteristics and core skills of an effective coach
The leadership continuum: directing, advising, teaching/training, mentoring, and coaching
Three levels of coaching and when each approach is appropriate
A structured eight-step process for coaching specific performance or behavior issues
Building rapport, defining the coaching process, and engaging the person being coached
Three levels of listening: content, meaning and impact, and global listening
Using open-ended and provocative questions to promote reflection and action
Identifying goals, supports, barriers, assumptions, and counter-goals
Reducing defensiveness and resistance while increasing ownership and accountability
Developing agreed-upon actions, commitments, follow-up, and alternative approaches

LEARNING METHODS

This course is highly interactive and applications oriented. Dr. Elizabeth (Betsy) Aylin is an executive coach and organizational consultant who helps leaders strengthen their organizations, develop high-performing teams, and lead successful change.

Betsy has more than 30 years of experience helping leaders develop their leadership capability, strengthen their organizations, develop high-performing teams, and lead transformational change. Her work spans public utilities, nonprofit organizations, and private industry, where she partners with executives to improve organizational effectiveness, leadership capability, workforce readiness, and strategic execution.

Drawing on experience as both an executive Human Resources leader and external consultant, Betsy has designed and led executive coaching, 360-degree feedback, leadership development, succession planning, and organizational change initiatives.

Betsy's coaching philosophy is grounded in collaboration, curiosity, and practical application. She partners with leaders to identify meaningful goals, leverage their strengths, and build the capabilities needed to navigate complex organizational challenges.

Thomas L. DeBell, P.E.

Leadership Coach

Tom DeBell is a leadership coach, speaker, and trainer and a former utility executive, manager, and engineer with 34 years of experience in the utility industry.

After completing a successful 34-year tenure in the public utility sector, primarily at Riviera Utilities in Foley, Alabama, Tom founded a leadership training and coaching enterprise in August 2023 to focus on the development of effective leaders.

Throughout his tenure at Riviera Utilities, Tom held various pivotal roles, including engineer, senior manager, and ultimately, President/CEO. As a utility leader, Tom experienced firsthand the value of continuous growth and development and led the campaign for executive coaching within his organization. Drawing from a diverse network of resources, he facilitated developmental and coaching services for members of his executive team, fostering professional growth and organizational cohesion.

As a leadership coach, speaker, and trainer, Tom secured several coaching certifications as a John Maxwell Certified Leadership Team Member and DISC Consultant, a Full Focus Certified Pro, and a Six Types of Working Genius Certified Facilitator. These credentials, coupled with his bachelor's degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Clarkson University in Potsdam, New York, and his status as a registered professional engineer in Alabama, underscore his commitment to professional excellence and leadership development.

Who Should Attend?

Designed for electric utility engineers, designers, technicians, and field personnel who are responsible for, or who make decisions concerning, distribution systems, as well as those involved in the management, construction, and operations aspects of distribution systems.

This course is conducted at a practical level and is appropriate for degreed engineers and engineering technicians, as well as non-degreed high school graduates with a general knowledge of the electric utility system.

Course Level

Basic/Intermediate Level 1: No prerequisites, though some advance preparation is requested, including attending an orientation session on September 21 from noon to 1pm.

All materials will be provided at least two business days prior to the class with access instructions, so they can be downloaded tin advance to take notes on.

Instructors

Lead Instructor R. John Miner, P.E., is an accomplished executive manager and educator with over 45 years of experience in the electric utility industry. He is president of Collaborative Learning, Inc., of Austin and San Antonio, Texas and has been an APPA instructor for more than 30 years and an instructor for the University of Wisconsin for 20 years. Before forming his own company, he worked for the Austin, Texas, Electric Utility Department, Rochester Public Utilities in Minnesota, and as an assistant professor for the University of Houston. John earned a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering (with honors), and a Master of Science degree in engineering science, both from the University of Toledo. John is a Senior Life Member of the IEEE and is a registered Professional Engineer in the states of Texas and Minnesota.

M. Thomas Black, P.E., is an accomplished executive manager, consultant and course instructor with more than 30 years of experience in the electric and gas utility industries. In addition to working with Collaborative Learning, Tom’s experience includes employment with both municipal and investor owned utilities across multiple jurisdictions in Colorado, North Carolina, South Carolina and Florida. He teaches a variety of courses on technical topics and also has extensive executive level experience in managing electric and gas utility systems, including serving as chief energy officer and energy delivery general manager. Tom has also served on the boards of RMEL and the Colorado Association of Municipal Utilities and is a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).

Erich Schoennagel, P.E., has cultivated over 45 years of experience in the electric industry. He is a former manager and engineer with CenterPoint Energy and managed the Transmission Project Engineering group. Erich served for 15 years as a member advisor and chairman of the Underground Transmission Task Force for the Electric Power Research Institute until his retirement from CenterPoint Energy. There he directed research related to underground transmission and superconductivity. He was a board member of the annual TSDOS symposium, and a former member of the American Concrete Institute 336 committee related to foundation design and construction.

Tom DeBell, P.E., is an independent consultant and course developer and instructor for Collaborative Learning with experience in the electric, water, telecommunications, and gas utility industries. Tom recently concluded a successful 34-year career with Riviera Utilities, a municipal utility in Foley, Alabama. Transitioning from this extensive career in November 2023, Tom founded an executive and leadership coaching company. During his tenure at Riviera Utilities, Tom held various pivotal roles, including engineering and management positions, culminating in his role as President/CEO. In his engineering roles, Tom developed line construction specifications, designed transmission and distribution lines, including both overhead and underground distribution, and collaborated closely with construction crews on major line projects. Tom also specialized in the design and construction of electric transmission and distribution substations, conducted system coordination studies and implemented cascading protection schemes.
