Collaborative Learning, Inc. and NEPPA have partnered to offer the first in a series of four 1-hour webinars to help NEPPA members better understand regulatory requirements, leadership skills, a changing workforce, and emerging technologies in the utility industry.  

The CL-NEPPA Webinar Series is being offered as part of NEPPA's Public Utility Management Program (PUMP).  Participation in at least two of four webinars is expected as part of completing PUMP.

Development Hour (PDH) upon completion of this webinar.

Webinar Description:

The 1-Hour Taking Care of Business: The Economics of Your Distribution System Webinar will be held Thursday, April 9th beginning at 11:00 am and covers the following.

  1. The moral and regulatory imperatives for a safe and functional distribution system
  2. The fiduciary responsibilities for management of distribution assets
  3. The business imperatives for a robust distribution system
  4. Overview of economics applied to electrical distribution decision-making (loss evaluation, component and equipment investment alternatives, financial risk management, customer contributions, etc.).

This webinar presents a business case for diligent attention to and investment in the electrical distribution system.  As the bread and butter of all Public Power systems, the distribution system is essential to business success.  It is close to every customer and a visible community asset. What condition is it in today?  How well is it meeting customer needs with respect to adequacy and reliability of service? How resilient is it to the elements of nature and to the changing expectations of customers?  Does your utility have a plan for future expansion, renovation, and replacement of aging components? Is the distribution system adequately supported by your executive management and governing board in the form of adequate capital and operating budgets, as well as effective decision-making on specific projects and improvement initiatives? 

Participants in this webinar will come away with a deeper understanding of business management and economics applied to electrical distribution.  They will leave the seminar better prepared to assess the economics of their distribution system and present a compelling business case for effective distribution management and investment to their executive management and governing board.

    About the Facilitator:

    Before forming his own company in 1995, John worked as a management consultant with two nationally recognized consulting/engineering firms, served as Chief Operating Officer for the Austin, Texas, Electric Utility Department, and as General Manager of the Rochester, Minnesota Public Utilities. John has been an instructor of technical and management courses for the American Public Power Association for 35 years and for the University of Wisconsin Madison for 20 years.

    John's technical seminars and workshops for utilities have covered such topics as application of the National Electrical Safety Code (NESC), overhead and underground distribution systems, electric system planning, construction, operations and maintenance.  John earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering, with honors, and a Master of Science degree in Engineering Science, both from the University of Toledo.  He is a member of Tau Beta Pi and Eta Kappa Nu engineering honorary societies.  John is a Senior Life Member of the IEEE.
